WHOSE UNCLAIMED A$$ET$ ARE THEY, ANYWAY? |
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA LAWCHEK®
Billions of dollars in unclaimed funds and property lay dormant in the United States. YOU could be entitled to the following unclaimed assets: Forgotten Savings and Checking Accounts; Safe Deposit Box Contents; Uncashed Money Orders, Cashiers Checks, Travelers Checks, and Payroll Checks; Unused Gift Certificates; Uncashed Stock and Mutual Fund Dividends; Stock Certificates; Unclaimed Security and Utility Deposits; Overpayment of Bills; Various Credit Balances; Unknown Refunds; Court Deposits; Insurance Payments; Uncashed Death Benefit Checks and/or Life Insurance Proceeds; Health and Accident Insurance; HUD/FHA Refunds; Veteran Benefits; Oil/Gas Royalties; Real Estate; Tax Refunds; Mortgage Refunds; Bonds; Unpaid Retirement Benefits; and many other financial assets too numerous to name. How do these assets become 'lost?' Billions of Dollars have become unclaimed due to the following: post office errors, misspelled names, companies filing for bankruptcy, unexpected changes of address, divorce, job relocation, and the death of relatives and friends that did not have a will. Government agencies that possess unclaimed funds are required by law to make an attempt to locate the owners. Unfortunately, that may mean simply sending a letter to the last known address with no further attempt to find the owner. This month's LAWCHEK® Bulletin offers you all of the resources you need to find out if any of this unclaimed money belongs to you. We've researched various state sites and have discovered that the majority possess unclaimed money databases that are absolutely free to use. This eliminates the need to hire a search service that may demand a finder's fee or slap you with some other miscellaneous charge to find out something you can access yourself for FREE. In the United States, HAWAII, MONTANA, NEW MEXICO, and OKLAHOMA are the only states that do not have websites that post unclaimed property information and/or search databases. To ascertain whether or not you are entitled to unclaimed assets, write to the appropriate state and request a search be done on your name. You should include the following with your request: Full Name, Last Known Address, Social Security Number, and Contact Information. SPECIAL NOTE: Under the Unclaimed Property Law of some states, unclaimed assets will revert to the state and will become the property of the state if they are not claimed by the owners or their heirs within a specified number of years after first being recognized as unclaimed assets. After reversion occurs, all rights of the owners or their heirs to claim the assets will then be terminated. Below are links to various Unclaimed Property sites listed by state. Included are physical addresses for snail mail. If you would like to access the review of a particular state, click on the appropriate state name.
