Organizations & FOIA

There are many organizations interested in either the abilities of the citizen under the FOIA or the general abuses surrounding it.   These organizations do vary in political standpoints; some are "conservative" and others are "liberal."  All in all, a good place to look at what is being said about the FOIA.

American Civil Liberties Union

    A site dedicated to informing the public about civil rights.   The site pushes people not to take things for granted and be aware of what events have effect on their lives.  There is news about government both today and in the past.   Includes library, editorials and much more.

American Communication Association

    Information about different rights.  Covers most of the Americas.  Mainly a center for links of FOIA interests.

American Library Association

    Information for educating oneself about the FOIA and articles concerned with the public's right to know.

Brechner Center for Freedom of Information

    A site hosted and run by the University of Florida.   Most FOIA issues deal with Florida.  However, there are good government links and links to many FOIA sites.

Center for Investigative Reporting Inc.

    An in your face up-to-date information source about issues concerning possible misconduct by powerful individuals and institutions.

Center for Public Integrity
http://www.publicintegrity.org/
    A site dedicated to educating the public about how the government works.  Discussion of rights and not so public issues from all areas of society.

Coalition for Networked Information

    A group that hopes to help educate the public for easier changes coinciding with the changes needed to meet the economic fluctuations and social needs of America.

EFF "FOIA and Open Gov't." Archive

    National and International references interested in technological freedom.  A site maintained by the Electronic Frontier Foundation.  There are also alerts and special current event articles.

Essential Information

    Articles concerning national and international events dealing with Freedom of Information.  Interested in keeping the public educated with investigations, follow-ups, and suggestions for those who want to become involved.

FAS Project on Gov't Secrecy

   Federation of American Scientists created this site to inform the public.  The site is aimed to aid journalists, however, it is open to all.

Freedom Forum
http://www.freedomforum.org/
    Dedicated to the rights under the First Amendment.   Up-to-date events in the press and advocacy groups.  The members identify themselves as a nonpartisan, international foundation that pursues priorities of freedom through conferences, educational activities, publishing, broadcasting, online services, fellowships, partnerships, training research, and other programs.

    Originating from the United Kingdom, this source is largely an international update covering at least 15 countries and their Freedom of Information issues.  There are articles and historical features that use opened government resources.

National Freedom of Information Coalition

    An organization that works to strengthen themselves and others with knowledge. List of resources, meetings, members and goals. There is a mission statement as well as a newsletter to better communicate their information to the public.

National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting

    A site by the Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc. and the Missouri School of Journalism.  Promotes the use of electronic information.

November Coalition & FOIA and Privacy Act Explained

    Site dedicated to the protection of civil rights.  More concerned with government's drug policy.  FOIA is discussed as a 'how to' guide for involvement.

Public Citizen

    Links to special interests in law and government in general. Specific FOIA link as well.

Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press

    Help for reporters attempting to gather information that requires the use of the FOIA guidelines.  Example letters and a hotline are most beneficial features.

SPJ FOIA Main Index

   FOI searches aimed for members of the press, but available to the public.  Federal and State contacts, advocacy groups, coalition groups, national reports and statistics, filing requests for FOIA, newsletters, legal briefs, and the list goes on.  A good point to begin for many researchers.
